Degree Apprenticeship module. If taken in Electrical & Railway Engineering, it must be taken with Individual Research project (code 04 02279). If taken in Civil & Railway Engineering, it must be taken with Industrial Research Project (04 27091) and Railway Design Project (BEng) (04 31378).
This module forms 20 credits of the apprenticeship standard’s 60-credit End Point Assessment. It is completed in parallel with the student’s individual research project and, for the Civil Engineering pathway, design project (worth 40 credits in total).
The aim of the module is to demonstrate the student’s skills and behaviours in the context of their rail industry employment and their awareness of the rail industry, their chosen sector and the impact of their work on the wider industry.
Students will prepare and present a portfolio of evidence which demonstrates their having met the skills and behavioural elements of the apprenticeship standard. Evidence presented in the portfolio will be authenticated by the workplace supervisor(s).
Assessment will involve an occupational competence interview, outlining the learning achieved and project(s) undertaken in the workplace and the accompanying 40-credit project(s). The portfolio of evidence and project reports support the topic of the interview.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module students should be able to:
Demonstrate the skills and behaviours as defined in the Rail and Rail Systems Senior Engineer apprenticeship standard, and answer a series of questions around projects undertaken and on the portfolio of evidence;
Demonstrate development in their transferable skills appropriate to the workplace, such as management, teamwork, communication, commercial awareness and project planning and implementation;
Reflect upon their role within the employer’s business, the impact of policy and/or governance on their work and the impact of their work on the wider rail industry (UK and world-wide);
Maintain a personal record of training received and reflect on what has been learnt.
Reassessment: (for DA standard requirements ONLY)
Resubmission of portfolio and repeated interview (Reassessment grade will not be considered at exam board and has no bearing on outcomes to the degree award as outlined under University of Birmingham academic regulations) Only first attempt grade for this module will be considered as part of the award.
