Exclusions
Description Students will work the hours agreed in their contract; these will have been confirmed with their year abroad tutor prior to the start of their work placement.
Students will work to the best of their ability at their place of work. They will immerse themselves in the culture where the target language is spoken. They will acquire an improved understanding of aspects of the workplace / education system in the target culture, and day to day life at the host location.
The Department of Modern Languages will set out the course requirements and residency requirements for its students in its briefing material.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • demonstrate improved linguistic competency by at least 1 level (i.e. from B1 to B2, from B2 to C1) through appropriate study;
  • demonstrate a good understanding of the professional environment of a country where their target language is spoken;
  • demonstrate increased understanding of the target culture in general;
  • demonstrate an improved understanding of their own strengths and weaknesses in preparation for their career decisions after graduation.
Assessment
Assessment Methods & Exceptions The Year Abroad will be assessed on a pass/fail basis only.

Assessment:
One text of 1500 words maximum in the target language (100%); This will be marked as pass/fail. No numerical mark is awarded.

Alternative assessment:
One text of 1500 words maximum in the target language (100%); This should be set with a view to assessing as much as possible of the student's learning experience abroad in relation to the module learning outcomes.

This will be marked as pass/fail. No numerical mark is awarded.

Method of Reassessment: Re-submission of failed component.
