Description In this module, undergraduate students participate in a period of economic and mathematical research that culminates in an undergraduate thesis. A faculty mentor from the school supervises each student. (The thesis is similar in scope to a UoB two month u/g dissertation.)

Students develop and apply their comprehensive abilities to independently analyse and solve practical problems with the knowledge and skills they have acquired during their degree programmes. Students are expected to become well-trained professionals capable of applying knowledge in their subject areas to contribute to solving practical problems.

The supervisor is responsible for evaluating the thesis proposal and advising on the implementation of the research. Students have a short viva in which they present the thesis and answer questions from thesis examiners. Before credit is awarded for the thesis, the student must make all changes to the thesis required by the thesis supervisor and the thesis examiner.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Demonstrate a good understanding of modern theoretic principles of research in their chosen area.
  • Conduct an analysis of a problem based on the fundamental principles of their subject area.
  • Plan, in conjunction with their supervisor, a period of research and manage their time
  • Demonstrate a good understanding of and ability to apply the mathematical methods appropriate to their area.
  • Communicate mathematically to audiences with non-mathematical background.
  • Prepare a report at a professional standard.
Assessment
Assessment Methods & Exceptions Students undergo a short viva and present a thesis of a maximum of 15000 words. The thesis must be well-structured in accurate English. It must contain the following components: a personal statement; a description of the task; a table of contents; an abstract, keywords and preface; main body (including the background of the research topic, project demonstration; process description; result analysis and conclusion); acknowledgements; appendices (as appropriate) and references.

Standard for Evaluation
1.Basic Content
1) Theories and knowledge should be expressed clearly and accurately;
2) The thesis should be well-organized with sufficient, well-grounded arguments and logical reasoning;
3) Appropriate data processing methods should be applied to produce calculations in support the conclusions.

2.Contribution
1) The thesis must contain an appropriative literature review.
2) Analyse and solve, under the guidance of their supervisor, problems using theories and knowledge acquired in their subject area;
3) Collection and analysis of data relevant to their thesis topic.

3.Expression Skills
1) The thesis is well structured and written in accurate English.

4.Creativity
The extent to which the thesis contains independent opinions and whether it has improved on previous research is taken into consideration.
