This module will introduce students to quantitative research methods.
It will cover all aspects of quantitative research methods, namely: Generating hypotheses, simple research designs (e.g. post and pre-post designs (experimental and quasi experimental), longitudinal and cross-sectional), validity and reliability, data collection methods (e.g. questionnaires, observation schedules, test), basic data analysis using data analysis software such as R or SPSS (e.g. calculating descriptive statistics and producing charts; probability and significance testing; parametric and non- parametric inferential statistics such as chi-square, correlations and t-tests), and writing research reports. Students will be made aware of the importance of conducting research in line with ethical principles, such as the BPS Code of Ethics.
Research examples will focus on developmental and/or cognitive psychology in Education settings.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module students should be able to:
Evaluate different research designs used in quantitative research
Evaluate different data collection methods used in quantitative research
Use data analysis software to perform basic data analysis, and be able to interpret outputs
Write research reports in line with quantitative research conventions
Design studies that adhere to established ethical principles
