Description This module builds on the content covered in the LC Quantitative Research Methods module.

It will examine more complex quantitative research designs (e.g. complex experimental designs such as randomised controlled trials and more complex non-experimental designs such as multi-wave, multi-level longitudinal designs), and data collection (e.g. determining the psychometric properties of research instruments/ data collected). It will cover more sophisticated data analysis techniques and work with larger datasets (e.g. inferential statistics for datasets with multiple predictor or outcome variables, such as regression analysis and ANOVA). The importance of conducting research in line with ethical principles, such as the BPS Code of Ethics will be further emphasized and discussed in relation to the relative strengths or weaknesses of particular research designs/instruments.

Research examples will focus on biological, cognitive, social and developmental psychology.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Design complex quantitative research studies, taking practical and ethical considerations into account
  • Select appropriate data collection instruments for generating quantitative data
  • Use data analysis software to conduct sophisticated data analysis techniques, and interpret outputs
  • Write research reports according to quantitative research conventions
