Description Film Culture and Media Skills will provide an introduction to film, television and digital media in working contexts, providing pre-production experience for a hypothetical short film project The module will also provide students with grounding in the basics of key skills and topics which will include: academic skills, film production roles and creative media production skills. Working towards the short film concept, seminars will analyse the ways in which films are made, sold and consumed in different contexts (online, broadcast, cinema, film festivals etc). Working towards a group pitch at the end of the module, students will also be provided with guidance on key documents for the filmmaking process, including treatments, mood boards, storyboards and screenplays.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Articulate the different ways in which audiences engage with short filmmaking, from art cinemas and film festivals to online distribution platforms, thereby demonstrating an understanding of the context of short filmmaking;
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the ways in which film production is influenced by local, national and international arts policy;
  • Apply appropriate production techniques in the development of a short film concept
