Restrictions It is an NMC requirement that all students have an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check prior to starting the programme Self- declaration of continued health and character is completed at the start of every academic year.

Exclusions
Description This module will introduce students to the study of population and individual health. This will include discussion of the political and social determinants of health, as well as genetic factors and the influence of genomics in individual health and personalisation of health care. Health behaviours and their potential links with physical and mental health, morbidity and mortality will also be discussed. Approaches to population health and health promotion will be developed together with the nurse’s influence and role in supporting health and wellbeing as part of a multi professional team. Awareness and strategies for maintenance of own health to support resilience in the practice environment will be discussed.

Students will be enabled to develop a theoretical understanding of communication strategies and skills used to support the delivery of effective health promotion, health maintenance and self-care, informed decision making and consent.

A range of learning and teaching activities will be used, including lead lectures, seminars, tutorials, case studies. Students will use small group work and enquiry based learning to undertake an aspect of field work from which they will develop a 20 minute presentation. Opportunities for formative presentations with peer review will be provided as part of the module. Student learning will be supported by appropriate digital materials together with involvement of agencies, professionals and service users to enhance experiential understanding. Students will have access to placement experiences and are encouraged to formatively reflect on an episode of health promotion they have observed or undertaken as part of their portfolio work.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Discuss the wider determinants of health that may impact on individual and community health and the influence of health science and technology in informing health and wellbeing;
  • Describe the external factors that influence health and social care delivery, considering the role of the nurse in promoting health and wellbeing;
  • Outline a strategy for promoting health with a given individual and family, population or community recognising when there may be need for reasonable adjustment and how to support others in developing health literacy;
  • Explain approaches to person centred communication that demonstrates partnership and promotes autonomy and empowerment for health;
  • Consider strategies for maintaining own health in nursing;
  • Demonstrate ability to contribute to team work and participate in peer review.
Assessment 33182-01 : Community Profile : Presentation (20%)
33182-02 : Essay (2000 words) : Coursework (50%)
33182-05 : Peer Review : Presentation (10%)
33182-06 : Group Presentation : Presentation (20%)
Assessment Methods & Exceptions Assessment:
(50%) 2000-word individual assignment (LO 20.1; 20.2 & 20.5).
(50%) Group presentation to sub-group of students and academic staff of digital community profile (mark awarded to group ). In the case of extenuating circumstance preventing the student from joining in with their group, the student would be asked to undertake a 5 minute viva voce of their community profile in place of the presentation. (LO 20.3; 20.4; 20.6).

Reassessment:
Resubmission of the failed component.
Assignment: students will use the feedback provided to develop their work and resubmit.
Presentation: group is supported to address problem areas of the presentation prior to re-presenting (mark awarded to whole group) to academic staff. If a member of the group is unable to attend the re-presentation then he or she will be asked to attend a 5 minute viva voce with two members of the academic team.

Internal Hurdles:
No compensation permitted. All assessment elements must be passed
