Restrictions It is an NMC requirement that all students have an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check prior to starting the programme Self- declaration of continued health and character is completed at the start of every academic year.

Exclusions
Description This module will enable students to:
  • Explain the principles of disease causation to individuals and families;
  • Articulate underpinning policy and need for engagement in public health initiatives, health protection and health screening campaigns e.g. communicable disease surveillance, antimicrobial stewardship, immunisation programmes;
  • Use communication skills and a strengths-based approach to enable informed choices, decisions and self-management of health problems;
  • Engage with opportunities to discuss the impact of behaviours harmful to short or long term health;
  • Provide meaningful health information and advice in the context of individual circumstances, accessibility and reasonable adjustments.

Learning and Teaching Strategies

A range of learning and teaching activities will be used, including lead lectures, seminars, tutorials, case studies, technology enhanced learning, input from service users, other agencies and professionals, as appropriate.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Articulate principles of pathogenesis in an accessible way for a chosen audience in order to improve understanding of the impact of health behaviours;
  • Draw upon communication skills and techniques in order to promote health and facilitate self-management;
  • Reflect upon their health communication recognising other factors needed to support the development of health literacy and self-management by individuals;
  • Demonstrate effective team-working.
Assessment 33183-01 : Health Promotion Learning Resource : Coursework (30%)
33183-02 : Communication OSCE : (MDS) Structured Clinical Assessment (70%)
Assessment Methods & Exceptions Assessment:
(30%) Health promotion learning resource (for peer-led simulation teaching) group mark (LO 20.2, 20.3, 20.4);
(70%) Communications OSCE (LO 20.1; 20.2 & 20.3).

Reassessment:
Resubmission of the failed component;
Health promotion resource: group will have advice and guidance to support them to address any shortcoming in the resource before resubmission of the learning resource;
Communications OSCE: resit.

Internal Hurdles:
No compensation permitted. All assessment elements must be passed
