Aims

This module aims to enable students to develop in three key areas

1: Leadership and coordination of care:
  • Use of theories supporting leadership, team management, economics and coordination of care;
  • The political role of the nurse in leading care;
  • The role of professional citizenship in leading nursing;
  • Role modelling and use of risk management, safe delegation and supervision decisions to other members of the care team;
  • Manage decisions, organisation, prioritisation and reporting during major incidents, near misses, serious adverse events and critical incidents;
  • Performance, human factors and resource management and planning;
  • Managing equitable access and safeguarding.
2. Quality:
  • Management of patient safety;
  • Key nursing metrics, performance indicators and the use of quality improvement science and change management theories;
  • Managing audit processes and quality improvement;
  • Positive learning cultures.
3. Professional supervision, competence and development:
  • Consider the impact of learning on organizational and people development;
  • Facilitation and supervision of learning within the team, assessing others competence for delegated activities;
  • Supporting self and others in the working environment;
  • Critically reflect on own accountability and scope and the development of strategies that support resilience and emotional intelligence;
  • Current NMC standards and requirements to achieve eligibility to be entered as a nurse onto the NMC register.
A range of learning and teaching activities will be used, including lead lectures, seminars, tutorials, case studies, technology enhanced learning, input from service users, other agencies and professionals, as appropriate.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Critically reflect on episodes of team leadership and management demonstrating effective use of feedback on own development, professional citizenship, resilience and action planning;
  • Articulate how patient outcomes, metrics and improvement science are used to support quality improvement;
  • Critically discuss management of risk, prioritisation of workload, budgetary and resource management in ensuring safe evidence-based care within the interdisciplinary care environment;
  • Select appropriate strategies to act as a leader and professional role model and ambassador and supervise others learning and development;
  • Meet all NMC (2018) skills and standards of proficiency and requirements of the NMC code (2018) for entry to the NMC register.

Assessment Methods & Exceptions Assessment:
(0%) (Pass/Fail) Practice Assessment Document (LO 20.5);
(30%) individual viva voce relating to reflection, professional development and civic engagement (10 minute) (LO 20.1 & 20.4);
(70%) 3000-word quality improvement plan (LO 20.2 & 20.3).

Reassessment:
Students will resubmit or re-sit any failed component(s);
Placement: a further placement period will be organised for reassessment of practice.
