Exclusions
Description This module aims at students who have already attained a high level of proficiency and extends receptive and productive skills to a highly sophisticated level encompassing several registers. It will develop further skills from Level 8A. Strategies and study methods will be further developed to increase independent learning. Cultural knowledge of the country where the language is spoken will be enhanced through students’ research. Teaching is through practical language classes involving both whole group and small-group/pair-work activities, aiming at developing all language skills, with particular emphasis on oral communication. Conversations, discussions and debates on topical (current) issues will be a constant feature. A wide range of audio-visual resources are used routinely. However, particular emphasis will be put on productive skills (speaking and writing).
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Perform a variety of highly unpredictable oral and written tasks in the target language;
  • Deliver an oral presentation in the target language on a highly complex topic and debate related issues;
  • Attain sophisticated competence in formal and informal registers;
  • Identify and articulate in writing and speaking some knowledge of a wide range of cultural aspects of the country where the language is spoken;
  • Show understanding of current issues of the country where the language is spoken;
  • Demonstrate significant progress towards achieving B2.2 Level of the CEFR for languages in the use of German language.
Assessment 33390-01 : 90-minute reading/writing exam : Exam (Centrally Timetabled) - Written Unseen (50%)
33390-02 : 10-minute oral assessment : Class Test (50%)
Assessment Methods & Exceptions A 90-minute reading/writing exam on campus [50%].

A 10-minute oral assessment [50%].

Alternative assessment if on campus activity is restricted: The reading/writing exam will take place online. Students have 24 hours to access the paper. If live oral assessments are planned, then the alternative will either be recorded presentations or conducted via Zoom/Skype.

Re-assessment: Resit failed component.

Alternative re-assessment for Exchange students: According to the policy of the home institution.
