Students will be presented with a selection of legal problems that legal service providers and associated services face in the real world and will be required to work in groups to research the associated issues and devise a ‘solution’ to one of those problems. Problems will be posed by a range of partners from commercial and service industries along with British and International NGOs and potentially academic colleagues on issues arising from or linked to their research. Projects will be curated to ensure they are appropriate to the particular degree programme.
It is anticipated that solutions proposed by students might encompass: use of technology (e.g., development of apps or use of websites); forms of public legal education and training; and development or re-engineering of systems and work models, etc. Students will be introduced to examples of such legal solutions and approaches to addressing them through the taught component of the module. They will be required to present their solution in a summative presentation and to reflect on the process.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module students should be able to:
Utilise independent legal research skills to develop a comprehensive understanding of a complex real life legal scenario.
Work with other students to analyse and evaluate the findings of independent research in order to create an appropriate and effective solution to a prescribed legal problem.
Plan, write and deliver a presentation that demonstrates the group’s collective analytical and problem solving skills.
Critically reflect on their collective performance.
