This module prepares students for their final year of study by allowing them to consolidate disciplinary knowledge in the fields of Anthropology and/or African Studies, to extend study skills relevant to their degree programme, and to further develop cross-transferable skills. It provides all students with a thorough grounding in research methodologies relevant to Anthropology and its cognate disciplines within African Studies (for instance history, literature, development). Students will gain knowledge of research design and implementation, research ethics, and independent study skills, and will also practise a selection of methodologies for assessment.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module students should be able to:
Use research methodologies appropriate to their degree programme (Anthropology and/or African Studies) in order to gather primary data;
Carry out research according to the University’s ethics guidelines and be able to reflect on research conduct;
Show engagement with relevant academic debates in order to construct a research project suitable for a final year dissertation;
Show practical knowledge of how to go about carrying out independent research, including being able to identify potential difficulties in research implementation.

Assessment: 1 x research portfolio to comprise a 1500 word reflective piece plus appendix evidencing the collection of primary data. Appendix to be maximum of 1000 words and/or include photocopies of historical archive or other written source material (1 A4 side per archive/source) (50%); 1 x 2000 word research proposal (50%)
