Exclusions
Description Three hours per week, all primarily in the target language, covering advanced grammar, translation, stylistics and oral and written production. Emphasis will be placed on learning advanced formal registers in written and oral outputs.

The student will also have the opportunity to achieve an extra qualification by taking the International Catalan Certificate issued by the Institut Ramon Llull and held at the University of Birmingham
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Show solid understanding and critical awareness of the structures of Catalan in order to function effectively in a Catalan-speaking environment with emphasis on oral and written competence.
  • Achieve advanced level competence as recommended by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
  • Acquire translation skills and strategies involved in translating different types of texts (expository, narrative, technical, etc.)
  • Communicate fluently and spontaneously with a broad lexical repertoire.
Assessment 33755-01 : 2 x 500 word Translation pieces : Coursework (50%)
33755-02 : 2 x 250 word continuous assessment pieces : Coursework (25%)
33755-03 : Oral-aural assessment : Class Test (25%)
Assessment Methods & Exceptions Assessment: 2 translation pieces of 500 words each (50%), 2 pieces of continuous assessment in Catalan of 250- words each (25%) and Oral-aural examination (25%) Reassessment: No resits are permitted in final year. If students miss the assessed task owing to extenuating circumstances, the failed task would be rescheduled at a later date. The January examination is not centrally timetabled.
