Description The module will be delivered by way of two-hours interactive lectures per week and four one-hour seminars. Most of the information students need to know will be provided during the lectures. However, we expect students to complete their lecture notes by readings included on the seminar handouts. Each seminar will provide students with reading materials in French (cases, articles, and book chapters) regarding important topics that have been introduced in lectures.

The aim of seminars is:
• To check that students have understood the material covered in lectures
• To improve students’ analysis of this material
• To acquire the necessary French legal methods skills to understand French legal reasoning and write French style two-part essays

Lectures and seminars are all conducted in French. Lectures will be recorded, and recordings will be available on the module’s Canvas page.

The objective of this module is to introduce students to the French Constitution and the institutions of the French Republic. The following topics are studied: Past constitutional regimes since 1789. The Parliament. The Executive. The hierarchy of norms. The Conseil constitutionnel and the hierarchy of norms.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the French Constitution and of its founding principles;
