Description
The module will cover multiple key aspects of fundamental immunology, linking experimentation to the generation of current immunological theory. Topics will span the initial cellular and molecular mechanisms regulating the establishment of functional lymphoid microenvironments, through to the immunological processes involved in the generation of effective immune responses to pathogenic challenge. In parallel, study of immunological theory will be complemented by the introduction of current immunological research techniques and tools that play an essential role in advancing laboratory-based immunological research.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module, students should be able to:
Demonstrate a detailed understanding of the fundamental concepts of immunological system function related to host defence and pathology (demonstrated by written examination and coursework).
Demonstrate a detailed understanding of the cellular and molecular interactions required to establish primary and secondary lymphoid organs (demonstrated by written examination and coursework).
Discuss at an advanced level the mechanisms involved in the activation and regulation of lymphocyte responses to antigenic challenge (demonstrated by written examination and coursework).
Critically evaluate and apply practical knowledge of research techniques used to investigate immunological system development and function (demonstrated by coursework and written examination).
Integrate an understanding of immunological theory with specific research techniques and tools used to interrogate immunological function (demonstrated by written examination and coursework).
Critically evaluate and summarize cutting-edge immunology-related research publications (demonstrated by coursework and written examination).

Assessment Methods & Exceptions
The module is assessed by a combination of a 3 hour written examination (50%) and course work (50%) - news and views article Reassessment: Academic failure: If a student fails the module then they will be required to repeat the failed components only. Failure to submit: Submission of coursework is compulsory for the programme. Students are advised that failure to submit without justifiable reason could result in failure of the module. Students will be required to submit outstanding work to meet the module outcomes.
