This module will investigate basic and advanced concepts associated with reproduction. Time will be spent understanding spermatogenesis and oogenesis, fertilisation and early development and pregnancy. Techniques currently associated with assisted reproduction for the treatment of infertility will be discussed. The latest advances in reproductive biology will also be discussed in relation to new methods of contraception, infertility treatment and the generation of animal models for the study of disease and the physiological role of individual genes.

By the end of the module, students should be able to:
Understand concepts associated with: testicular and ovarian function; development and maturation of gametes; the role of gametes in fertilisation and early development; placentation
Understand the concepts, principles and ethics associated with a variety of assisted reproductive techniques, including fertility treatment, stem cells, reproductive and therapeutic cloning and contraception
Discuss the use of assisted reproduction techniques for genetic manipulation
Discuss the applicability of animal models to an understanding of disease

The module is assessed by a combination of a 3 hour written examination (50%) and course work (50%) - experimental data interpretation - practical write up Reassessment: Academic failure: If a student fails the module then they will be required to repeat the failed components only. Failure to submit: Submission of coursework is compulsory for the programme. Students are advised that failure to submit without justifiable reason could result in failure of the module. Students will be required to submit outstanding work to meet the module outcomes.
