Description This is one of a pair of twinned modules which introduce you to important skills needed to study politics, and the process of engaging in political research. It takes the view that the skills you need to achieve your full potential are best acquired through activity and, as such, you will learn through ‘doing’, producing an e-portfolio as you progress through the modules.

In this second module, you will learn about the process of political research, and how academic research advances political knowledge. You will examine key theoretical and methodological debates in social science, explore and evaluate different approaches and methods, try out (elements of) these approaches and methods, examine different kinds of data or evidence, and design your own research proposal.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Identify approaches and methods in political research;
  • Compare and contrast different methods in political research;
  • Illustrate how different methods can be used in political research.
