The aim of this module is to advance an understanding of the latest use of biomaterials for enhancing human health. This final year module harnesses the basis of materials sciences and biology already learnt through the Biomedical Materials Science course to develop deep understanding of biomaterials applications and their interactions with the human body: in particular how to employ or modify biomaterials to avoid or delay onset of problems and diseases. Students will journey through advanced concepts, applications and viewpoints from different makers and users of biomaterials, including research, medical and also art applications. Students will gain an understanding of the pathway from conception to production in industry and explore different ways of communicating about biomaterials.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module students should be able to:
Evaluate and discuss the use of biomaterials at different body sites to enhance human health
Describe the sequence of events involved in evaluating biomaterials for use in human health
Discuss different viewpoints of biomaterials
Explore and discuss different ways to communicate about biomaterials
