This module will aim to give students an understanding of regulation of the cardiovascular system rfom endothelial and nerve-mediated control of blood vessels to mechanisms underlying cardiac ischaemia-reperfusion injury and cardiac rhythmicity/arrythmicity, to integrated regulation in conditions such as exercise, environmental stressors systemic hypoxia hypertension, heart failure and cardio- renal disease. The links between laboratory-based research, preventative/ restorative strategies and clinical application will be emphasised.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module students should be able to:
Demonstrate a detailed knowledge of current views on ion channels and second messengers that regulate vascular muscle, endothelium, cardiac rhythm and contractility
Demonstrate a comprehensive an understanding of ways in which neural and local mechanisms interact to regulate the cardiovascular system
Demonstrate knowledge and critical awareness of research methods used to investigate these topics and of current views on how cardiovascular regulatory mechanisms are changed in specified disease states
Demonstrate competence with simple laboratory skills, more advanced laboratory methodology, experience of scientific method and application of theoretical knowledge in a practical context.
Demonstrate an ability to critically evaluate the scientific literature in this area.
Assemble, a logical argument, based on substantiated facts and present this in writing and orally
Assessment
34277-01 : Overall module mark : Mixed (100%)
Assessment Methods & Exceptions
The module is assessed by a combination of a 3 hour written examination (50%) and course work (50%) - literature review Reassessment: Academic failure: If a student fails the module then they will be required to repeat the failed components only. Failure to submit: Submission of coursework is compulsory for the programme. Students are advised that failure to submit without justifiable reason could result in failure of the module. Students will be required to submit outstanding work to meet the module outcomes.
