Description This module will explore the process of staging a show from the perspective of the production team. The focus will be on the contributions of, and relationship between, Stage Technologies, Design and Stage Management and how each of these ‘backstage’ fields enhance the overall development and evolution of a show alongside the creative team.

Students will learn the practical processes involved through tutor-led classes as well as having the opportunity to apply these skills working in a supported manner on a full-scale department show. Students will develop an understanding of the timelines, process and considerations in providing meaningful support for a production.

The students will be taught and assessed through specific practical and theoretical work that embeds core employability skills within the theatre. This will include their contributions to working backstage on a production, and a more in-depth theoretical exploration of one area of the field in a project.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to (depending on specialism):
  • Demonstrate an understanding of, and skills involved in the use of technical systems and design elements for a small performance event with all supporting documentation;
  • Demonstrate an understanding of, and skills involved in rehearsing a production and running the stage for a small performance event with all supporting documentation;
  • Demonstrate an understanding of, and skills involved in designing, sourcing and building scenic and costume elements for a small performance event with all supporting documentation;
  • Demonstrate an understanding of, and skills involved in the craft and contribution of a professional production department during the performance process including pre-production preparation, research, rehearsal, production week, performances, post production and portfolio paperwork.
