Description This module investigates service user and carer involvement in mental health. It gives a foundational introduction to service user and carer involvement; examines critical and practical perspectives on co-production; rights, advocacy and decision-making; power, ethics and psychiatry; disability politics and mental health; equalities and human rights; carer perspectives; the service user and survivor movement history and theory; service user and survivor research and epistemologies.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module, students should be able to:
  • Critically assess service user and carer perspectives on psychiatry, psychology and mental health services
  • Critically reflect on the influence of service user and carer involvement on the development of psychiatry, psychology and mental health services Understand and appraise disability and service user/survivor politics and theoryExplore the interaction of academic and practice knowledge and experiential knowledge through a case study.
Assessment 34478-01 : 2,000 Word Individual Assignment 1 : Coursework (50%)

Assessment Methods & Exceptions Assessment will be as follows:1 x 2000 word reflective assignment on an aspect of mental health research or practice that has been influenced by service user and survivor and/or carer politics and theory (50%) ;1 x 2000 word theory into practice case study assignment critically examining an approach to co-production or service user and/or carer involvement in an organisation, research or practice aspect of the student’s choosing (50%).
Reassessment: Failed elements will be reassessed as necessary ; 2000 word reflective assignment (50%)2000 word theory into practice case study (50%).
