Description This blended learning module is intended for students with IELTS entry level 5.5-6.5, depending on the requirement specified in their conditional offer letter. It is aimed at further developing the language competency and listening and speaking skills needed for study at a UK university. The module consists of 6 hours class tuition per week, and is built around listening and speaking activities based on authentic academic texts. Students will be exposed to a broad range of listening input such as academic lectures and discussions. They will refine their seminar participation strategies, such as turn-taking and - giving, participant tracking, active listening and initiating, steering and concluding the conversation, and learn to formulate an opinion based on the critical evaluation of each other’s contributions and offering support from academic sources. Academic Listening and Speaking 5 is differentiated from Academic Listening and Speaking 4 in that the focus will be more on autonomous learning, and on following and sustaining an academic argument. Students will be required to work both individually and collaboratively. Materials and tasks will selected to meet the needs of the group as appropriate for mixed-ability groups. Students will be expected to review, extend and plan their learning by self-selecting and completing online and offline tasks and self-assess their progress on a weekly basis.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Use grammatical and lexical features of complex spoken English in an academic and social context in controlled, accurate and flexible way
  • Proactively identify own errors and respond effectively to feedback by correcting or reformulating
  • Produce the vowels and consonants of English with high accuracy, using controlled and effective word and sentence stress, intonation and pace to create impact and highlight key points
  • Discuss academic and social topics to exchange ideas or opinions with others, using a flexible and effective repertoire of language and strategies to initiate, develop, steer, maintain and repair the conversation
  • Understand more complex English in an academic and social context
  • Use a flexible and effective range of listening and note-taking skills for complex, extended academic listenings in order to derive meaning, select information and identify purpose
  • Differentiate fact from speaker’s opinion in academic settings, and identify and critically evaluate arguments and their supporting evidence
