Description This blended learning module is intended for students with IELTS entry level 5.0-6.0, depending on the requirement specified in their conditional offer letter. It completes module Academic Reading & Writing 3. It is aimed at further developing the language competency and reading strategies & writing skills needed for study at a UK university, such as using sources for information and writing essays. The module consists of 7 hours class tuition and 2 hours tutorials per week, and is built around reading and writing activities based on accessible authentic EAP texts. Students will be required to work both individually and collaboratively. Materials and tasks will be graded to the different needs of the group as appropriate for mixed-ability groups. Students will be expected to review, extend, and plan their learning by completing online and offline tasks, and self-assess their progress on a weekly basis.

Academic Reading & Writing 4 is differentiated from Academic Reading & Writing 3 in that the speed of delivery, volume, frequency and language difficulty/length of learning materials are further increased. Students will be required to critically evaluate authentic EAP texts.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Accurately use general and academic vocabulary and collocations for reading and writing accessible authentic EAP texts in an academic context
  • Use a variety of complex sentence structures and link elements together with a wide range of cohesive devices
  • Structure a paragraph logically using effective topic sentences to state ideas and arguments and giving relevant supporting detail from accessible authentic EAP texts
  • Plan and logically structure a coherent piece of writing on an academic topic, using a good range of transitions, to develop an argument or express an opinion, evaluating different ideas or solutions.
  • Critically evaluate the relevance of accessible authentic EAP texts to inform own writing and effectively summarise, paraphrase and quote information without plagiarising
  • Follow the Harvard conventions for citation and referencing and produce an accurate reference list
  • Identify own repeated errors and respond to feedback effectively by proofreading and redrafting own work
