Description Language course, Middle Egyptian Hieroglyphs. This first part of the course will introduce the hieroglyphic script and its component signs and teach the word order, sentence structure and basic grammar of Middle Egyptian through the study of short inscriptions and offering texts. Regular translation exercises are an integral part of the course.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Transliterate and translate short sentences and short inscriptions such as offering formulae from stelae;
  • Demonstrate a sound knowledge of reading hieroglyphs;
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the word order, sentence structure and tenses of Middle Egyptian hieroglyphic texts;
  • Demonstrate their knowledge through class tests and examination.
