Description The module will develop the students’ historical understanding of processes of decolonisation and nation-formation through exploration of selected historical material related to the processes of independence and nation-building in Latin America throughout the nineteenth century until the outbreak of the Mexican Revolution.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • show a sound understanding of post-independence Latin American countries and in particular the social structures and historical processes which shaped them;
  • explain the main theoretical perspectives that underpin historical processes of decolonisation and independence and apply them to the Latin American case;
  • analyse and assess contextually a wide variety of historical issues facing nineteenth-century Latin America as well as make informed reasoned arguments about them.
