The module will develop students’ understanding of the main historical developments relating to the incorporation of Latin American countries to global markets, the emergence of mass politics and the effects of the geopolitics of the Cold War in the region until the end of the twentieth century.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module students should be able to:
demonstrate a thorough understanding of the key issues that stake out the history of Latin American countries throughout the twentieth century as well as of their historical processes and social formations;
Analyse and assess these processes and events from the perspective of dependence and modernisation theories;
Apply a variety of analytical and argumentative skills in order to produce reasoned, well-informed critical arguments about contemporary Latin America.
