The primary goal of this module is to introduce student to the study of Islam and women. It will do so by discussing how Islam has impacted on the lives of women: legally, socially and ontologically. It will reflect on the diversity of experiences, religious traditions and perspectives of women within Islam. The module will investigate the role and status of women in Muslim societies today in order to identify the intersection between religiously derived codes and norms of behaviour and expectation, economic realities, the role of the state, and social institutions. The module will address ‘hot topics’ facing Muslim women today, including but not limited to: identity, family, education, sexuality and health, and public roles.
