This module continues students’ orientation to Qur’anic and Classical Arabic. A textbook will be followed which will offer an introduction to grammatical concepts and to vocabulary relevant for approaching the Qur’an and a broader range of prose texts written in classical Arabic. Students will use standard reference works to assist in translating and interpreting key texts in their original language.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module students should be able to:
Use basic language reference works such as grammars, dictionaries and relevant online resources;
Translate more complex Arabic sentences into English with the help of basic reference works;
Analyse and explain key grammatical features of a given text.
Assessment
Assessment Methods & Exceptions
Assessment:
2 x formally-administered class tests of one-hour duration each (50% each).
Reassessment: Failed individual assessment elements only need to be reassessed if they contribute to the failure of the whole module. In this event, the module tutor will set an alternative class test to replace the failed assessment task.
