Description This module offers first year students an introduction to classical reception studies, an especially vibrant and important area of research in our disciplines, concerned with the survival and presence of Greek and Roman culture to the present day' Through a series of case-studies, students will become acquainted with some methodologies for discussing the various ways in which ancient literature and culture is re-worked and re-interpreted in the modern world. Case-studies will vary year by year, but will be drawn from a wide spectrum of 20th and 21st century Anglophone and translated literature and culture. They may include examples from: novels and poetry; comic books and graphic novels; architecture; political discourse; film, television and theatre.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Demonstrate an understanding of key methodologies for the study of classical reception;
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the significance of classical influences in modern literature and culture;
  • Analyse and discuss different modern case studies with reference to ancient literature and culture;
  • Undertake independent research to identify and analyse examples of classical reception in 20th/21st century literature and culture.
