Description Musical Theatre and dance students require a kinaesthetic relationship with the functional human body. The Healthier Performer introduces students to four main topics of study that directly relate to the performer’s maintenance and well-being of their ‘instrument’. The main aim is to provide a solid foundation of knowledge from which students can actively care for their bodies whilst engaging with the physical elements of the degree programme. With this main aim in mind, lectures are specifically related to the functional elements of dance and musical theatre training.

A study of Dance History will introduce students to cultural and historical developments across key dance styles, including ballet, modern/contemporary, jazz, hip-hop and tap dance. It will provide a historical survey of dance and its developments in a theatrical and popular culture context. Study skills are embedded in this unit with the aim of equipping students with the necessary learning tools to study efficiently in higher education.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Demonstrate an understanding of significant historical and cultural developments in dance.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the basics of sports nutrition, functional anatomy of the musculoskeletal system, and functional anatomy of the voice, together with issues surrounding vocal health and sports injuries.
  • Identify and apply a range of critical and cultural approaches to performance work utilising appropriate evidence.
  • Express informed research ideas using appropriate English and relevant academic writing conventions and styles.
