This module is designed to develop the students’ research skills in preparation for the dissertation in the final year.
Preparing to Research lectures provide the opportunity for students to develop their research skills and formulate a plan for small-scale research projects. The students will develop their understanding of research design, methodologies, evaluating literature, ethical considerations and sourcing primary research in a performance context.
Dissertation Proposal lectures guide the student to achieve more autonomy in selecting a suitable area of research for the dissertation project.
The module gives students the ability to design, plan and engage with existing research in order to formulate and equip them with the necessary skills to develop an independent research project.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module students should be able to:
Demonstrate an ability to select a range of relevant primary and secondary sources;
Engage with a range of research activities and methodologies relevant to the student’s desired topic;
Conduct a research project that formulates a clear line of enquiry that incorporates appropriate research methods and critical thinking;
Identify and evaluate key areas of research collected in order to plan an unbiased and logical research project.

Assessment: 15-minute individual presentation on the student’s desired research methodology most applicable to their planned project (60%); 1,000-word Dissertation Proposal (40%).
