In Dance 1 students will study the basic fundamentals in classical ballet, contemporary, jazz and tap dance techniques. The purpose of the module is to provide a clear understanding of the technical and artistic requirements as necessary to the demands of dance and musical theatre.
This year 1 module will develop the necessary knowledge and understanding of the aesthetic concepts which support the acquisition of appropriate technical skills. Technique classes are provided weekly and are structured to enable students to chart and monitor their own progress.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module students should be able to:
Demonstrate a basic knowledge and understanding of dance technique in the chosen dance genres;
Demonstrate an understanding of musicality and artistic interpretation as required by each discipline;
Express the necessary stylistic demands as necessary for the dance solo;
Demonstrate self-awareness and understanding of independent physical training appropriate to the demands of each dance discipline.
Assessment: Performance in 2 tutor-led dance classes (students’ choice) from the following list: Classical ballet; tap; jazz; contemporary (approx. 1 hour each class) (40% each class); And 1 dance solo in a taught subject of the student’s choice (approx. 1.5 minutes) (20%).
Reassessment: Failed component only: Performance in 2 tutor-led dance classes (students’ choice) from the following list: Classical ballet; tap; jazz; contemporary (approx. 1 hour each class) (40% each class); And 1 dance solo in a taught subject of the student’s choice (approx. 1.5 minutes) (20%).
