Description This module builds on the knowledge, understanding and skills students have achieved at level C and prepares them for the final performance module at level H. Musical theatre choreography draws on the historical aspects of dance history and looks in more depth at the key choreographers from the musical theatre canon. Students develop their choreographic skills to consider the integration of text, music and dance and its ability to contribute to narrative development and explore a range of differing dance styles.

Students are given the option to perform in either Integrated Performance or the Dance and Choreography Project:

Integrated Performance classes encompass the full ensemble performance of an abbreviated version of established musical theatre repertoire. In this the students are expected to perform both solo and ensemble roles. The focus is on the combination of acting with song and dance, and by the end of this module the student will have established the necessary skills as an actor/singer/dancer that will meet the demands of Level 6 study.

Choreography classes are a collaboration between director/choreographer and the student to give a narrative performance to the audience through the use of dance and music.

The Summer Show process will begin in the 3rd trimester, and students will have the opportunity to work with casts and creatives to create new work for live performance at the end of the academic year, and work on their self-reflection and professional development planning.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Demonstrate in-depth knowledge of and understanding of how singing, acting and dance are integrated into a personal and independent rehearsal and performance process;
  • Demonstrate an ability to recognise the use of choreographic and staging tools within musical theatre works;
  • Understand how to creatively develop the choreographic process within a particular genre and period of musical theatre;
  • Create a choreographic group dance drawing on a wide movement vocabulary to develop character and plot within a musical theatre work.
