Exclusions
Description	This module provides an introduction to French politics and society. It is divided into 5 Dossiers, each tackling a different aspect of contemporary French society. The first two Dossiers are relatively general in nature, offering students who have never studied politics before a way into understanding some key political concepts together with an introduction of how the economy works. Subsequent Dossiers deal with the French political system, the causes of discontent within our democracies and the changing nature of employment. The module is taught primarily in French with plenty of opportunities for discussion and debate. Students are supported through structured vocabulary learning and the seminars are themed around problems/ dilemmas which encourage the students to walk in the shoes of politicians in order better to understand the challenges they face.
Learning Outcomes	By the end of the module students should be able to: Display an understanding of the stylistic feature of op-ed pieces; Produce 3 short op-ed pieces in French on selected aspects of contemporary French society studied during the semester; Engage in a one-to-one discussion in French on the topics on which they have written their op-ed pieces.
Assessment	35101-01 : Editorial/opinion pieces (900 words) : Coursework (60%) 35101-02 : 5-7 Minute Oral Presentation in French : Presentation (40%)
Assessment Methods & Exceptions	Assessment: The overarching theme of the assessment is that they are a journalist who produces 3 short editorials on French politics and society and is then invited to take part in a ‘televised’ discussion of their ideas. 3 short editorials/ opinion pieces written in French on material covered in seminars and/or political events unfolding in France (60% of mark, 900 words); A 5-7 min individual oral exam in French based on a short presentation of the main ideas of one of the editorial pieces followed by 2-3 questions (40% of the module mark). Reassessment: Re-submission of failed component. The round table oral component would be re-assessed by an oral discussion if there are insufficient numbers to recreate the round table format.
