This module introduces students to key texts in European literature from the Enlightenment to the early twentieth century. Students will consider what it means to read texts in translation as well as read literature from two European cultures. The course is designed so as to bring out the critical links between the themes of the various texts and genres read in this course, e.g. the dimensions of the pastoral v the dimensions of the city, the representation of social change in literature; how texts deal with ‘gender’ and the perception of East v West. This course is for First-Year Students. Texts are being read in translation, and discussion will be in English.

By the end of the module students should be able to:
Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of key texts studied on the course;
Demonstrate familiarity with a range of literary texts and an awareness of their significance in European culture;
Show a detailed understanding of what ‘reading in translation’ means and how translations negotiate linguistic as well as cultural boundaries;
Show an appreciation of the interplay between genre and subject matter in works of literature;
Critically analyse literary texts with reference to their context in time and place, drawing on understanding and insights gained over both semesters.
