Description	Russia is the biggest country in the world and one of the most talked about. Yet although Western news outlets pay close attention to Russia’s international activities, they tell us less about the country and the people behind the headlines. This broad, introductory module goes beyond the stereotypes to offer a closer look at what Russia is like and why. It will focus on how the major events of the twentieth-and twenty-first centuries have impacted on contemporary Russian society, beginning with the 1917 revolution and bringing you right up to perestroika, Putin, and Pussy Riot. In addition to learning about these historical events, you will read, watch, and listen to a wide range of Soviet and post-Soviet literature, TV, movies and popular music to gain a deeper understanding of (Soviet) Russia and the Russian experience. This module is aimed at 1st-year students with no prior knowledge of Russian culture or language.
Learning Outcomes	By the end of the module students should be able to: Identify key moments in cultural history from 1917 to the present day and explain why they are significant; interpret key cultural texts and discuss their significance to Russian history; analyse the way in which Russian culture intersects with history, politics and society; demonstrate a detailed understanding of how cultural texts; dramatise or explicitly interpret the Russian experience as particular to the development of Russian identity.
