Exclusions
Description	The aim of this first-year introductory module is to provide students with the opportunity to engage with key cultural figures and texts taken from Medieval and Renaissance Italy. Literary works by Dante, Petrarch, Boccaccio and others will be explored, analysed and placed in their broader historical and cultural contexts. Students will also engage with paintings by such figures as Botticelli, Caravaggio, Gentileschi, Carpaccio and others. Apart from acquiring skills in critical analysis they will also learn some of the terminology needed to be able to express their understanding and appreciation of Renaissance art works. A visit to the Barber Institute will allow them to put what they have learnt into practice and to demonstrate their newly-acquired skills in ‘reading’ and presenting paintings.
Learning Outcomes	By the end of the module students should be able to: discuss key texts and figures in Italian culture; demonstrate an awareness of the socio-historical and philosophical context in which these texts were produced together with an understanding and appreciation of Italian culture through the ages; engage with some key ideas and events and be able to express informed views and support these with convincing argument and evidence.
