Description This third year module studies contemporary contextual Christian theologies (and their theologico-ethical concerns) from the second half of the 19th century to the present. This exploration stretches across different continents and Christian traditions, including Roman Catholicism, Eastern Orthodoxy, Protestantism, and Pentecostalism.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Identify, evaluate and critique key events and concerns impacting the development of Christian theology from the nineteenth to the twenty-first centuries;
  • Engage critically and constructively with core themes within the contextual theologies of world Christianity;
  • Write a research essay on a related topic or a research-based analytical commentary on indigenous Christian art.
Assessment
Assessment Methods & Exceptions Assessment:
Students will be given the opportunity to choose ONE of the following:
  • 1) Select a piece of indigenous contemporary Christian art (either visual or textual) and write a 4000 words interpretive, analytical commentary on its theological (theologico-ethical) content, in light of the contextual theologies and/or historical events that have shaped it;
  • 2) Write a 4000 words research essay on a related topic form the list of provided questions.
Reassessment:
As above only if extenuating circumstances apply . Students would be required to submit any reassessment in the same mode of assessment as chosen for the original submission.
