This module will address the development of German-language cinema from the 1960s to the present, focusing on films from German-speaking Europe that present challenges to their viewers to view the world in a new way. Students will examine how cinema has been deployed as a tool of social commentary and critique on matters of national and international importance, such as migration, gender and the legacy of the past. By studying films from different time periods, we will examine how filmmakers have reflected on the power of the image. We will also reflect on the continuing relevance of these films to contemporary problems.
