This 20-credit module offers students the opportunity to develop their linguistic, creative, technological and problem-solving skills by completing one translation of an audio-visual text using subtitles. The tutor will offer students one TV programme, a film or another audio-visual text in Russian to watch at the start of the module. This programme will be split by the tutor into extracts. Each extract should contain about 1,500 words. Each student will be given one extract from this programme to translate. This approach allows for both group work and independent study. In groups, students will discuss the translation issues, such as the choices to be made while translating characters’ names, humour, realia and other relevant issues, which occur throughout the programme. They can also discuss the register, style and genre of the programme as well as technical issues related to the production of subtitles using the recommended software. Independently, each of them will have to translate their own individual extract and present it in the form of subtitles. There will be three steps for students to follow: (1) to transcribe their extract in Russian before translating it; (2) to produce a written translation of the extract next to the Russian ST (in a table) in Word format; (3) to present their translation in the form of subtitles in electronic form.
