In this module, students will learn about and practise screenwriting as a craft and industrial art form. Focusing on advanced elements of story structure and through close analysis of the dramatic strategies of screenwriting, students will creatively engage in the various stages of original scriptwriting via weekly seminars and workshops. Students will compose their own original long-form screenplay (approx. 75 pages) suitable for a feature-length film, learning to apply correct script formatting that meets industry standards. In addition, the assignments will include the writing of a log line, treatment, and beat sheet. Screenwriting: Film is an advanced theoretical and practical module that requires students come equipped with a basic and introductory understanding of screenplay formatting, screenplay story structure, and dramatic screenwriting strategies.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module students should be able to:
Demonstrate an understanding of and ability to apply dramatic strategies including story structure for feature-length screenplay composition;
Demonstrate an understanding of and ability to apply correct industrial formatting standards;
Demonstrate an understanding of the uses of and ability to generate an original log line, treatment, and beat sheet for the purpose of composing an original long-form screenplay;
Compose an original long-form screenplay of approx. 75 pages (suitable for a feature-length film).
