Exclusions
Description This module aims to develop students’ emerging knowledge of Biblical Hebrew, helping them to acquire such proficiency in grammar that they will be able to understand scholarly discussions of biblical texts and read unseen prose passages with the help of appropriate key reference works. During this module students will use a grammar chosen by the tutor as well as read a number of Hebrew texts. Students will also be expected to translate an unseen passage in the second half of the module, as well as increase their awareness of some of the challenges of biblical interpretation.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Translate sentences into English with the help of key reference works;
  • Explain grammatical features of a given passage of text from the Hebrew Bible;
  • Translate a passage of unseen Hebrew text;
  • Evaluate one or more English translations of the Hebrew Bible with reference to the original language.
Assessment
Assessment Methods & Exceptions Assessment:
2 x formally-administered class tests of one hour duration each (50% each).
