Exclusions
Description This is an English for Academic Purposes module for students whose level of English is at C2.

The module will develop advanced academic skills for undergraduate study in a range of scientific disciplines. The emphasis will be on advanced literacy incorporating critical thinking and analytical skills such as data presentation, the development and evaluation of academic argument, and synthesis of various sources of information.

The incorporation of a lab report and/or dissertation of a discipline-appropriate research project will allow students to develop the terminology and approaches relevant to their chosen discipline.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Structure and write a fully referenced foundation level essay and/or lab report appropriate to their discipline using appropriate academic language and conventions demonstrating:
    a) The ability to match structure and purpose in writing
    b) The use of appropriate academic grammatical structures such as nominalisation and passive forms
    c) The appropriate and judicious use of source material and/or lab data following academic conventions
    d) An appropriate lexical range
    e) High level accurate language
  • Demonstrate effective oral presentation skills in the context of a short Powerpoint presentation of their research findings and/or lab results. This includes the appropriate use of discipline specific terminology, slide design and effective data presentation
  • Demonstrate a full range of speaking and interpersonal skills for different academic contexts to be able to contribute effectively to group work and discussions including debates and presentations or oral summaries
  • Structure and write an extended research project and/ or lab report including data collection.
  • Understand and follow general and disciplinary academic conventions when producing a piece of assessed work.
Assessment 35269-01 : S1 Take Home Essay Final Grade : Coursework (20%)
35269-02 : S2 Take Home Essay Final Grade : Coursework (60%)
35269-03 : S1 Presentation Final Grade : Presentation (10%)
35269-04 : S2 Presentation 10% : Presentation (10%)

Writing assessments:
Essay 1 (including process) 25%
Essay 2 (including process) 45%

Aural/Oral assessments:
Seminar discussion 15%
Presentation 15%

An internal hurdle of 5 percentage points below the progression requirement will be required for the average of the two presentations and also the weighted average (including process) of the two essays

A student who has failed to meet any of the internal hurdles, but who has passed on a weighted average, will have the opportunity to re-take on the skill on which they have fallen short.
