Description This module provides the students with an overview of the key aspects of road safety both in the UK and worldwide. The module will provide students with an understanding of the nature and characteristics of the safety problem, an understanding of the sources (and quality of those sources) of information about safety, a sense of road accident causation and a understanding of key safety improvement measures including engineering, education, injury prevention and safety audit techniques. The module will give students the opportunity to explore real safety related data for an area and interpret the nature of the problems and potential solutions.
The module will also cover the international standards for road safety (such as those specified by UNECE, WHO, the World Bank, and the iRAP organisations) and will examine management practices for the provision of road networks with emphasis on road infrastructure and road users. In addition the module will cover global road safety policies.
The module will provide a foundation on which further work, for example thesis writing, in the area of road safety can be based.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • identify the scale and nature of the transport safety problem worldwide and the main transport safety impacts
  • understand the main ways in which safety problems arise in the transport system
  • undertake case study analyses of safety problems which arise at different scales within an urban area
  • understand techniques for evaluating changes in safety as a result of implementing new schemes
  • identify new directions in safety research and developments in safety remedial measures
  • develop an evidence based road safety campaign
  • develop a simple road safety management model based on road infrastructure safety management concepts
  • critically analyse the international legal instruments for road safety
  • explore sustainable road safety countermeasures
