Description The first semester component of this module is an evidence-based literature review on an area of Biosciences of interest to you. In addition to the review you will be asked to write a section where you consider how this area is/could be taught in Schools.
The second semester component is structured around a School placement. This module, which is linked with the Undergraduate Ambassador Scheme (www.uas.ac.uk), will give final year undergraduate students a first-hand experience of science education by offering a teaching experience that provides key transferable skills and encourages undergraduates to consider a career in teaching.
• Students will complete a Literature Review on an area of the Biosciences
• Students will be linked with a local school where they will spend 3-4h per week for at least 7 weeks working closely with a teacher.
• Students will complete a special project negotiated with their School contact and University supervisor
Students will be selected by interview for their commitment and suitability for working in schools.
Learning Outcomes

By the end of the module students should be able to:

Collect, organise and synthesise and critically analyse a large body of information from a range of relevant sources
  • Communicate aspects of the Biosciences to school pupils
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with teachers
  • Plan, organise and prepare for their engagement in schoolDevelop innovative and creative solutions to problems and challenges and critically review their implementation
  • Present their work in a written report and oral presentationShow an understanding of the Ethical issues related to working in Schools
