Description	This module is a practical translation module, which will teach students how to translate a variety of non-fiction texts from Italian into English.Workshops will focus on improving decoding skills, since it is only possible to be a successful translator if you are a skilled reader of Italian texts. We will cover complex sentence structures, discourse analysis, and lexical development. The classes will for the most part be taught in Italian. The reading comprehension elements of this course have been designed with reference to William Grabe, Reading in a Second Language: Moving from Theory to Practice (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2009)
Learning Outcomes	By the end of the module students should be able to: Name the component elements of a sentence, and identify the grammatical function of various elements (e.g. noun phrases, extended adjective phrases) in a complex sentence; Demonstrate an awareness of text-structure and discourse organisation and perform summaries of key ideas contained within a text; Select appropriate syntactic, semantic and pragmatic strategies for translating non-fiction texts from Italian to English (in accordance with a functionalist approach).
