Description The module builds on student experience in the Clinical Skills Laboratory and the aim is for the students to initiate their direct patient clinical care, and progressively consolidate their clinical skills in a dental practice setting. Students learn to recognise and present clinical findings. (This includes the assessment, diagnosis and treatment planning for a range of oral and dental conditions that present in a clinical environment through analysis and application of prior learning), and to further develop their clinical skills by carrying out dental procedures on patients.

They are also introduced to the individual component specialties of dental practice to provide interdisciplinary integrated adult dental care. It enables them, in a controlled environment to gain experience of specific clinical needs presented by patients and to be taught by a range of general dental practitioners, specialists and consultants. Communication, organisational and team working skills are developed throughout this module with emphasis being placed on the student’s interaction with both patients and other dental care professionals.

The care of patients always takes precedence over other concerns. All patient treatment is carried out with minimal trauma and discomfort, ensuring infection control and avoiding any danger to the patient’s health. In this module students undertake the treatment required to maintain the oral health of their patients. Students develop their skills and independence as they progress though this and the following two years of clinical teaching.

The module builds on the teaching of Radiography and Radiology in BDS 2 and 3 through chairside support by a tutor radiographer, continuous assessment and the completion of in course competency assessments.

This module introduces students to Oral Surgery and the Oral Surgery Speciality teaching environment, both in the emergency care area and in planned procedures. In the Summer term, students will commence the skills components of Oral Surgery Teaching and commence Oral Surgery patient care.

The teaching is carried out in the School of Dentistry and students spend their time in clinical placements, developing their diagnostic skills and practical ability whilst treating patients. The module comprises a high proportion (300 hours) of face to face clinical teaching as well as clinical lectures and tutorials. Continuous assessment takes place within these contact hours.

This module introduces and builds on learning outcomes for clinical care that are repeated in subsequent years. Those affecting patient safety must be fully met, whereas those with clinical activity, would be expected at a learner or novice standard.

This is a repeat only module (see university regulation 11.11.10)
