Description
This module comprises two elements, General Dental Practice Phase of Clinical Practice and Adult Outreach Teaching and is based around direct patient care within the clinical areas of the Birmingham Dental Hospital and in outreach clinics in the community dental services in the West Midlands.
This module continues the instruction in and experience of whole patient care which commences in Year 3 together with additional teaching in conscious sedation and Radiography / Radiology.
The aims of this module are for students to: • Develop a greater degree of independence and responsibility for the continuing oral care of patients • Extend their clinical abilities in the management of more complex cases. • Advance their understanding of the specific dental specialties listed above. • Gain experience of the use of conscious sedation in the management of patients. • Gain experience of emergency management of patients in Primary Care. • Increase their understanding and ability in dental team working. • Prepare themselves to undertake the responsibilities of independent practice.
The clinical placements within this module are supported by lectures and tutorials and continuous assessment informs the ongoing feedback that students receive on their performance at each clinical session. Continuous assessment in clinical practice underpins every session with feedback from outreach and cloacal teaching staff used to assess students’ achievement.
Teaching on this module is provided by a mix of academics, NHS staff and experienced clinical dental teachers from both general dental practice and community dental practice backgrounds
This is a repeat only module (see university regulation 11.11.10)
