Description This module is an introductory Arabic language module designed for absolute beginners in Arabic and teaches the basic structures of the language. The module aims to enable you to acquire a functional knowledge of the basic elements of the language, including essential communication skills necessary to develop an insight into Arabic culture and society . Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) is used and taught throughout.

If you are a native speaker, it is your responsibility to apply for an exemption. Please contact the Module Lead for further details.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Communicate with a degree of fluency about yourself
  • Listen and understand in detail selected short selection of recordings in the target language spoken at a natural speed
  • Read short authentic texts
  • Demonstrate knowledge of and the ability to apply in context the main aspects of basic Arabic grammar.
  • Show evidence of working towards use of the Arabic language to A1.1 level of the CEFR for languages.
Assessment 36348-01 : Oral Test : Class Test (50%)
36348-02 : Quiz 1 : Coursework (20%)
36348-04 : Quiz 2 : Coursework (30%)
Assessment Methods & Exceptions Assessment: Marks will be awarded for the following items of summative assessment:

Oral exam, 4-5 mins in Arabic (50%)

Continuous assessment (in-class MCQs - Multiple Choice Questions) (50%)

Alternative assessment if on campus activity is restricted: live oral assessments will either be recorded presentations or conducted via Zoom.

Method of reassessment: Re-submission of failed component

For students who are no longer on campus, the re-take of the oral exam will be conducted via Zoom.
