Description Lifespan Psychology A: Introduction to Developmental psychology, provides students with a critical introduction to the scientific understanding of human development through studying classic and contemporary theories and research. The module provides an overview of key topics within developmental psychology including (1) theoretical debates and research methods, (2) cognitive development, (3) social development, and (4) atypical development. Consistent with the British Psychological Society Accreditation Guidelines (2019) and QAA Benchmarks for Psychology (2016), the module applies multiple perspectives to studying development including but not limited to mind, brain, behaviour, experience, and social and cultural contexts (QAA 4.4).
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Demonstrate knowledge of historical and conceptual debates within the field of developmental psychology.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of a range of research methods and techniques used to study human development.
  • Understand and evaluate the empirical evidence underpinning selected theories of human cognitive and social development.
  • Demonstrate skills in searching for and evaluating scientific evidence related to developmental psychology.
  • Develop cogent arguments about topics in developmental psychology using appropriate empirical evidence.
